This map shows statistics on dental health in the US published by Bloomberg. The numbers are based on data from the Kaiser Family Foundation and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and were last updated in 2012.

You can choose the following datasets from the Choose Dataset menu:

• % of adults who visited a dentist in past year
• % of seniors with no natural teeth: percentage of adults 65+ who lost all their natural teeth to tooth decay or gum disease
• % of population living in a dental HPSA: percentage of population living in a dental Health Professional Shortage Area
• Dental health score: a score that takes the 3 criteria above into account giving each of them the same weight. For each variable, the state with the best dental-health measures received 0 points while the state with the worst received 33.3 points. Remaining states were given points proportional to where they fell between the best and worst. Points were summed to derive each state's dental health score, which has a range of 0-100, a higher score indicating worse dental health.

Looking at the overall score Connecticut ranks best with the lowest score of 9.3% and Mississippi worst with highest score 88.9%.

Using the Map

You can see the data value for an individual geographic unit (e .g. country, state, county) by moving the mouse over it.

You can zoom in by clicking on a unit and zoom out by clicking on the same unit or any point on the map outside of units.

Click on the button in the top menu to see the IPython notebook with the code to retrieve and process the data.

Click on the button in the top menu to see the data table used for the maps.

Click on the button to download the currently displayed map as a PNG image.

If you see in the top menu you can choose a color scheme from the drop down displayed on click.

If there is a menu item named Choose Dataset on the left in the top menu, you can choose different data series to display on the map from that drop down.
